La Rochelle has a long tradition of ecological awareness, and mobility is a key factor. Transdev has been working with the urban community since 2016 and is involved in the acceleration of the town’s adoption of electric transportation solutions.

An ambitious sustainable development plan for 2020

The objectives are clear: the urban community aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% per inhabitant by 2020, as well as the overall exposure of residents to transport-related nuisances. To achieve this, it needs to provide easier access for all to alternative transportation methods and include electric mobility as part of the Yélo transit network.


Proxiway, a Transdev subsidiary, proposes several clean mobility solutions:

  • An electric shuttle service operates between the town center and the park-and-ride car parks on the outskirts. It makes it possible to maintain service continuity, while guaranteeing the multi-modal nature of the network, thanks to a single ticket.
  • An electric car sharing system, Yélomobile, also forms part of the public transport network, to encourage inter-modal travel, via a single card making it possible to travel on the entire network or to rent a vehicle.

A range of innovations to encourage the diverse use of electric mobility

Since 2015, Transdev has been constantly innovating in order to make electric mobility accessible to all of La Rochelle’s residents: Yélo la Nuit provides access to Yélomobile electric vehicles 24 hours a day; a solar electric-powered maritime service was launched in 2016; the Réseau Yélo bus line went 100% electric in 2018…. All these transport methods are backed by a complete information system enabling travelers to check availability and usage at any time.

La Rochelle and Transdev are achieving convincing results as they work towards a successful ecological transition. Yélomobile represents no fewer than 231,200 liters of fuel saved and 708 tons of CO2 avoided in 17 years.
