Issy-les-Moulineaux (France), June 23, 2021 – As part of the revival of the night train in Europe, and to mark the European Year of Rail, Transdev and its Swedish subsidiary Snälltåget are launching the first trans-European night train linking three capitals: Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berlin on Sunday June 27.

    This night train operated and financed entirely by Transdev - Snälltåget, will run daily for the first time on Sunday, June 27, until September 4, and will then provide several weekly trips until the end of October 2021.

    Snälltåget has already operated the Malmö-Berlin route between 2012 and 2019 using the ferry between Trelleborg (Sweden) and Sassnitz (Germany).

    The Stockholm-Copenhagen-Berlin line is a new service, replacing the old Malmö-Berlin line, and is clearly in line with Snälltåget/Transdev's ambition to revive night trains in Europe, without public subsidies, using its own funds and with the only revenue from tickets sold to passengers.

    With this new connection, there are three essential novelties:

    • Stockholm and Copenhagen, the two largest Scandinavian capitals, are now directly connected to Berlin by night train, which was not the case before;
    • This will be the first regular night train line to connect Sweden, Denmark and Germany since the 1990s, almost 30 years ago;
    • A fourfold increase in the number of departures compared to 2019 with, during the summer period, one departure in each direction every day, instead of two departures in each direction per week as was previously the case on the Malmö-Berlin line.

    The inaugural trip will take place on Sunday, June 27, departing at 4:22 p.m. from Stockholm Central Station and arriving at Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) on Monday, June 28, at 8:52 a.m., making the trip 16 hours and 30 minutes long. The train will serve three European capitals: Stockholm – Copenhagen and Berlin. The first train from Berlin (Gesundbrunnen) will leave on Monday, June 28 at 6:54 pm, arriving in Stockholm on Tuesday, June 29 at 2:19 pm.

    Of course, in view of the health situation, all measures have been taken to assure our passengers that they will have a safe journey on the train.

    Furthermore, in order to contribute to the energy transition and to minimize the environmental impact of the journey, the Snälltåget train uses only green energy from hydro, wind and solar sources.

    In order to allow travelers to plan their next trip to Germany, it is also possible to book train tickets to about 30 German cities and to Prague directly from the Snälltåget website.

    The Snälltåget train will use different locomotives along the route; the carriages have been acquired and completely renovated in 2019 by Transdev / Snälltåget, with all the necessary amenities (air conditioning, new seats, new berths etc.). Three different types of seats are available for reservation: single seats (non-reclining), reclining seats and compartments (seats, berths or combined seats/berths).

    A restaurant car will be available on the Swedish leg of the journey (16:22 – 21:55) between Stockholm and Malmö. The restaurant will offer dishes made with local products served on real plates, with real cutlery and glasses to recreate the atmosphere of old-fashioned dining cars, with service at the seat. For the rest of the journey, a “snack” service will continue to be offered to passengers.

    In order to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, only transparent and fair competition will allow the rail offer and the quality of service to increase, thanks in particular to operators such as Snälltåget. This new “open-access” service, operated without any public subsidy, is Transdev / Snälltåget’s contribution to the debate on the development of competitive night train services in Europe. They are essential to achieve our climate goals, as a concrete alternative to air transport.
