How circularity applies to transportation?

05 September 2025

Here are some examples for transportation-specific circularity initiatives

  • Battery recycling and second-life batteries: Amsterdam, Stockholm and other cities are developing systems by which used electric vehicle batteries are repurposed for energy storage once their capacity drops.
  • Refurbished vehicles: Some transit operators refurbish buses and trains rather than ordering new ones.
  • Recycling of vehicle components: Companies are designing buses and trains with modular parts that can be easily disassembled for recycling or remanufacturing.
  • Shared mobility platforms: Platforms for vehicle sharing or ride-sharing help reduce the need for new vehicle production.
  • Circularity design in transportation infrastructure: Some regions are developing transport infrastructure (like cycle paths or modular stops) designed with reusable, adaptable components that can be easily disassembled or repurposed.
