Nomad Car Hydrogène (NCH2) - Interviews with the players

David Preterre, engineer at CERTAM

As part of the Nomad Car hydrogène project, CERTAM, as an expert in on-board measurement, used its PEMS-LAB® in real-life conditions on the Rouen Evreux route to estimate the tonnages of CO2 and pollutants avoided by substituting hydrogen for diesel.

Normandie Hydrogen Project (CERTAM & Transdev) [00:00:00] Visual introduction showing the coach in operation along with the project logo. [00:00:14] David Preterre introduces CERTAM, a technological research center affiliated with the CNRS. [00:00:23] He explains that their mission for the past 20 years has been to reduce pollutant emissions, primarily for the automotive industry. [00:00:32] Presentation of the partnership with Transdev. The goal is to precisely measure the pollution emitted by a diesel coach before converting it into a hydrogen‑powered vehicle (retrofit). [00:01:21] The experiment focuses on a real bus line connecting Rouen to Évreux. [00:01:42] Technical description of the vehicle: an 11‑year‑old Euro 5 standard coach that would normally have been withdrawn from service. [00:01:57] Explanation of the retrofit concept: instead of scrapping the vehicle, its combustion engine is replaced with a clean propulsion system to extend its life in an ecological way. [00:02:07] Focus on the measurement tool, the PEMS Lab. It is a mobile laboratory installed at the back of the bus that analyzes exhaust gases in real time while the bus is operating with passengers on board. [00:02:18] List of pollutants analyzed: CO₂ (carbon dioxide), carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and fine particulate matter. [00:02:29] The laboratory also measures non‑regulated gases such as ammonia and nitrous oxide for a complete scientific assessment. [00:02:56] Tests were carried out during summer 2021 to establish a solid baseline reference. [00:03:39] Major finding: switching to hydrogen on this line could save between 1,500 and 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. [00:04:13] Conclusion regarding public health impact. Transitioning to hydrogen eliminates harmful pollutants that affect lung health. [00:04:22] The hydrogen engine (fuel cell) emits only water vapor.

Yacin Ounani & Bruno Renou, INSA Rouen Normandie

INSA Rouen Normandie is providing its expertise to assess the impact of the complete hydrogen cycle as part of the operation of the first Hydrogen Normandy bus, with a study of the life cycle and overall environmental benefits of retrofitting, specifically to converted rolling stock.

Fernand De Sousa, President of IBF H2

IBF H2, a company specializing in the conversion of public transport vehicles, is contributing its know-how and professionalism to the integration of the hydrogen system and its maintenance, in compliance with the Ministerial Retrofit Order of March 13, 2020.

José Da Costa, Coach driver
