Electric vehicles

Energy Transition is happening and electric fleet are growing all over the world. It's a business shift, not a technical trend. Transdev is one of the world's leading operators of electric public transport. With a large fleet of electric buses running across 14 countries, we are making zero-emission travel a daily reality for millions of passengers, quietly, reliably, and at scale. We are proving that sustainable public transport is not a promise, it is already here.

Switching to electric is no longer optional

Transdev doesn't transition alone. By working hand in hand with local authorities, energy providers, and mobility stakeholders, we continuously learn, adapt, and co-create electric solutions that are built to last.

Transport accounts for a significant share of urban CO₂ emissions, and electric buses are one of the most effective levers to reduce air pollution and accelerate the energy transition, at a scale that only public transport can deliver. Electric vehicles transform the passenger experience. Quieter rides, cleaner air, and smoother journeys, the shift to electric public transport directly improves the quality of life in our cities, while cutting carbon emissions where they matter most.

Promoting zero emission solutions to build sustainable mobility

In order to increase public transport use, operators must offer quality, efficient and optimised services. And to improve the energy balance of public transport, mobility solutions must be as clean as possible.

The accelerated deployment of electric transport solutions around the world, such as trams and buses, is a step towards zero emission mobility.

With over 10 years of electric fleet operations across 14 countries, Transdev brings more than an operator's response to a tender. We guide and support our partners throughout their most ambitious projects (from early planning to daily operations) drawing on real-world lessons to build solutions that are resilient, scalable, and cost-competitive.

A concrete example of this approach: in the Netherlands, Transdev is reaching a milestone of 1,000 electric buses in operation, a scale that only becomes possible when years of field experience, strong local partnerships, and end-to-end operational expertise all come together.

Electric mobility is a whole ecosystem, not just a vehicle. From renewable energy sourcing and optimal battery dimensioning to smart charging infrastructure, every component must work in perfect symbiosis because the performance of the whole depends on the seamless interaction of each part.

Only when every component operates in full symbiosis does the promise of clean, reliable mobility become reality.

Electricity fleet requires smarter operations to unlock its full potential

Whether it's a single electric line or a full fleet transition, Transdev tailors its approach to fit each project. We also invest in innovation around electric mobility, exploring new technologies and smarter ways to operate. At the heart of it all: a data-driven vision, where real-time insights from every vehicle, route, and charging point help us continuously improve performance and reliability.

Smart charging, optimised battery management, and resilient charging infrastructure are not just technical requirements — they are the foundations of every successful electric operation. Here is how Transdev brings them to life, from Bogotá to Sweden to the French countryside.

Bogota, Colombia: pioneering large-scale electric operations

Transdev and its local partner Fanalca operate Green Móvil, the largest electric bus fleet in South America, with 406 buses and one of the world's largest electric depots at over 43,000 sq.m. But our role goes far beyond operations. Green Móvil developed the entire project from scratch: acquiring the fleet, designing the charging system, financing the depot, and launching an operation that now employs 1,400 people and serves 110,000 passengers every day.

To manage a fleet of this scale, Transdev developed its own smart charging solution,  designed in-house to optimise energy consumption, coordinate charging across the entire depot, and ensure the operation remains resilient day after day. By intelligently managing when and how each bus charges, the system reduces energy costs while keeping the fleet ready to perform at all times. Green Móvil is also piloting Latin America's first hydrogen-powered bus, running on green hydrogen, a zero-emission experiment set to enter commercial service later this year.

Gothenburg, Sweden: Measurable Impact at Scale

In western Sweden, Transdev deployed 145 electric buses across Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille for regional authority Västtrafik. Within just one year, the results were clear: nitrogen dioxide emissions were halved, and CO₂ emissions dropped by 10%, the equivalent of removing over 8,000 cars from the road annually. The fleet has since grown, and in Gästrikland, 63 fully electric buses now travel 4.3 million km per year, reducing CO₂ emissions by an estimated 44,000 tonnes over the life of the contract.

Centre-Val de Loire, France: giving Coaches a Second Life

Retrofitting existing coaches is one of the smartest ways to decarbonize without replacing entire fleets. In Centre-Val de Loire, Transdev successfully deployed the first approved electric-retrofitted coach in Europe,  and has since scaled to 25 retrofitted Iveco Crossway coaches, each equipped with a 192 kWh battery. By 2028, the target is 60 retrofitted coaches for school transport, building a proven and cost-competitive model for fleet electrification through retrofit.

La Rochelle, France: Extending buses lifespan via battery retrofit

In electric operations, the battery is the most expensive component of the vehicle, to buy and to replace - until now. In La Rochelle, Transdev worked with Forsee Power to pioneer a battery retrofitting approach on some of its oldest electric buses, extending their operational life at a fraction of the cost of full replacement. Through precise state-of-health monitoring and cell rebalancing, this technical innovation is contributing to reduce both Total Cost of Ownership and environmental impact.
