They are sometimes the only transport option and provide connections to islands, such as in Quiberon to the Houat, Hoedic and Belle-Ile islands or to Groix island from Lorient.

What is the difference between a ferry, a shuttle boat and a river service?
A ferry provides a scheduled maritime link, often carrying vehicles. A shuttle boat crosses a short obstacle, an inlet or a river, in a few minutes. A river service calls at several points within the same urban area along a waterway.
Why would a local authority choose a waterborne service?
A boat crosses water that roads can only bypass via a bridge or tunnel. It offers a direct link without new civil engineering works, and removes from the road the vehicles that would otherwise take the detour.
Are Transdev's vessels electric?
Some are. In Portugal, the AveiroBus network operates electric ferries alongside electric buses, as part of an emissions reduction effort. The choice of propulsion depends on the crossing, its length and the charging infrastructure available at the quayside.
