Nomad Car Hydrogène H2 (NCH2)

Nomad Car Hydrogène, a world first for Transdev, the Normandy Region and their partners

In Normandy, we are the driving force behind the Nomad Car Hydrogène (NCH2) project. To date, it is the world's first project to retrofit a diesel-engined coach into a hydrogen-electric coach, which will run on the Rouen-Evreux Express line.

The first hydrogen‑retrofitted coach, developed through a collaboration between the Normandy Region, Transdev Normandy, and several local scientific and technical partners. What is retrofitting? Retrofitting consists of replacing the diesel engine of a coach more than 5 years old with an electric motor powered by decarbonized hydrogen. This transformation extends the vehicle’s lifespan while eliminating its polluting emissions. Key Points of the Experimentation Technological achievement: a collective Norman project that converts a diesel engine into a hydrogen-powered engine. Zero emissions: when operating, the coach emits only water vapor, eliminating CO₂ emissions and atmospheric pollutants. Range and performance: the coach can operate for around 600 km per day on a single refueling, while also being particularly quiet. Environmental impact: this innovation helps reduce carbon footprint and improve quality of life. Deployment in Normandy Served line: the coach will run on line 216, connecting Évreux to Rouen. Refueling: it will be supplied at the EAS‑HyMob hydrogen station in Évreux. Pioneering network: with 10 hydrogen stations, Normandy has the first operational network of this kind in France. In 2024, this first hydrogen‑retrofitted coach in the world will begin transporting passengers, establishing Normandy as a leading region for hydrogen excellence.

What is retrofit ?

This is an operation consisting in adapting parts for a new need, usually by changing the technology without altering the function. On this project, the diesel engine will be replaced by an electric motor powered by a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity.

Bus Nomad Hydrogene

A Normandy innovation for zero-emission mobility!

Initiated by Transdev Normandie with the Région Normandie and conducted over 2 years in cooperation with a dozen institutional, industrial and academic players, Nomad Car Hydrogène is the world's first project to retrofit a diesel-engined coach into a hydrogen-electric coach.

By contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants, the Nomad Car Hydrogène is a sustainable, zero-emission mobility solution, helping to mitigate climate change and protect air quality in the Normandy region, while paving the way for a new industry enabling the retrofitting and extension of heavy vehicles.

Thanks to its collaborative and innovative nature, the project is contributing to the emergence of the H2 ecosystem in Normandy, through the ongoing training of employees and reflection on the professions of tomorrow, the production of quality analyses, reflection on the omnipresent safety aspect, and through public access to the experimentation.

The Nomad Car Hydrogène is an innovation that we are going to try out in practice:

  • Sustainable : increased vehicle lifespan to 20/25 years (instead of 14 years on average)
  • Technical : validation of the retrofit technique with the replacement of the combustion engine and installation of the retrofit kit
  • Zero emissions : technological optimizations to reduce all forms of emissions
  • Relevant : the Evreux-Rouen Express line and its 380km/day operation demonstrates that H2 energy is optimal for long journeys
  • Societal : citizen co-construction around H2 mobility issues
  • Committed and rooted in the region : unique governance in conjunction with all partners to monitor the project over 3 years with the use of local companies and skills
  • Decarbonized : moving towards green H2 refueling at the Vieil-Evreux refueling station
  • Environmental : studies of environmental benefits and pollutant emissions over a complete H2 cycle, from hydrogen production to consumption in operation (well-to-wheel study)

The experiment in detail:

Retrofit - adaptation and optimization of a hydrogen retrofit kit to enable its application on an IVECO Crossway coach. The current vehicle's internal combustion engine is then replaced by the hybrid system (H2/electric) fitted with a fuel cell. The engine block and diesel tank are removed.

Regulations - The vehicle's homologation route is completed in order to obtain approval from the Centre National de Réception des Véhicules (CNRV) as required by the Arrêté du 13 mars 2020.

Fueling - The HyMob EAS station at Vieil-Evreux is updated to enable daily recharging of the prototype coach.

Research

Greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants are then measured to compare the impact on climate and air quality of the retrofitted hydrogen coach versus the diesel coach. A life-cycle analysis is also carried out to assess the prototype's environmental footprint, from well to wheel. In other words, from the production of hydrogen to its consumption on the road.

Training

An ongoing training module for drivers is being developed to help them get to grips with the retrofitted vehicle during the experimental operation phase.

Humanities

The project also includes the development of a participatory research protocol co-constructed with all willing parties (travelers, drivers, local residents, road users, etc.) in order to produce a civic and responsible analysis of hydrogen uses.

Decarbonization

Study on the medium-term possibility of switching the Vieil-Evreux station's supply to green hydrogen, produced from renewable energies.

Innovation is Transdev's DNA. In addition to training our employees in the professions of tomorrow, operating electric, hybrid, NGV or biofuel vehicles, and adapting our workshops and depots to the energy transition, we work daily with local authorities to make their vision of the future a reality. By supporting the Nomad Car Hydrogène experiment, we are contributing to the emergence of a hydrogen ecosystem in Normandy for sustainable, low-carbon mobility.
