Transdev Sweden, through its subsidiary Styrsöbolaget, announces that it has successfully renewed its historic contract with Västtrafik, the transit authority for the Västra Götaland region, for 15 years. It will operate ferry services in the southern Gothenburg archipelago, Sweden's second largest city, for a total value of €290 million, starting in December 2028.

Winning this contract means that Styrsöbolaget will continue after already operating these ferry services in the southern Gothenburg archipelago for more than 100 years.

The contract provides for the continuation of three maritime links to the southern parts of the Gothenburg archipelago with a fleet of eight vessels, including four new electric ferries, the hybrid retrofitting of an existing ferry, and three ice-strengthened vessels. Under this contract, more than 90% of maritime services will be electric and zero-emission.

It also strengthens Transdev’s comprehensive offer in Sweden, where the Group also operates bus, coach, tram and regional train networks.

“"For Transdev, the energy transition is a commitment to rapidly convert our ferry fleet to an increasing proportion of 100% electric, low-emission, and zero-emission vessels. Reducing economic and energy dependence on fossil fuels is also a priority for Transdev and for Europe to ensure a genuine transformation of our economic model towards increasingly clean and sustainable mobility,“”
Antoine GrangeCEO Europe
emphasized Magnus Wikström, CEO of Transdev Sweden.
““We are very proud of Västtrafik's renewed confidence in us, building on our long-standing relationship of more than 100 years. It is proof and acknowledgement of our very attractive offer to transport authorities across Sweden, not only operating traffic but also designing and building zero-emission ships. Furthermore, it consolidates our operations and profile as a multimodal operator,””
emphasized Magnus Wikström, CEO of Transdev Sweden.

Transdev is focusing its development on the electrification of its maritime fleets in Gothenburg and Stockholm, to drastically reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact by retrofitting three ferries that otherwise would have faced scrapping in the near future. Silverö, Rex, and Älvsnabben 5 ferries may look like old ships, but underneath they have state-of-the-art hybrid or fully electric propulsion.

Gothenburg's maritime and river connections carry nearly six million passengers each year. Transdev Sweden generated a turnover of €524 million in 2025 and employs over 6,400 people.
