Reducing our emissions of air pollutants
Transdev has analyzed its customers' environmental expectations and challenges in order to respond appropriately to the specific constraints and strengths of each region.
Air quality is a major public health issue
Transportation accounts for 54% of emissions (in 2020) of nitrogen monoxide and dioxide (NOx), about half of which comes from private vehicles.
Public transportation is emerging as a solution to private car use and therefore air pollution.
However, as fleets are still predominantly diesel-powered and operate in urban centers, it is important for Transdev to monitor its emissions and improve in this area to contribute to the overall effort.
Although public transport is a more sustainable mobility solution than private cars, its environmental impact can still be reduced. For example, a city bus with a combustion engine generates an average of 4 kg of brake dust per year, a volume that can be limited with the right equipment.
A solution for reducing air pollution
Transdev is working with Tallano Technologies and IVECO BUS to test the TAMIC® solution: a system for capturing fine particles emitted during braking. This technology recovers more than 70% of the particles produced by friction between brake pads and discs.
Beyond its environmental benefits, this innovative project anticipates the arrival of future European regulations on non-exhaust emissions (braking and abrasion particles), which will apply to buses and coaches.
One of the main advantages of this technology is that it can be fitted to both new vehicles and buses already in service, facilitating its large-scale deployment.
The tests conducted in 2024 on the Soléa network in Mulhouse are an international first for the Group and pave the way for the next steps: approval of the device once the standards have been defined, followed by industrial development of the solution.
