Transdev, through its Swedish subsidiary Snälltåget, today launched a new daily cross-border rail service between Malmö (Sweden) and Oslo, the capital of Norway, via Gothenburg.

The new daily train departs Oslo in the afternoon and arrives in Malmö in the evening, while the return train departs Malmö in the morning and arrives in Oslo at midday.

We see strong potential for increased rail travel along the Copenhagen–Malmö–Gothenburg–Oslo corridor, particularly in the leisure segment. We believe that direct services, enhanced onboard comfort tailored for long-distance travel, and the addition of a restaurant car will be key factors in enabling rail to gain market share on this route

Carl Adam Holmberg, CEO of Snälltåget

Snälltåget already operates rail services, both day and night, between Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Austria. Norway thus becomes the fifth country served by Snälltåget. The new Oslo service connects in Malmö with Snälltåget’s existing night train service to and from Hamburg and Berlin.

The launch of this new rail service to Oslo is the result of Snälltåget’s targeted development strategy, its flexible business model, and its attractive fares, which allow passengers to travel comfortably over long distances—day and night—without changing trains across five European countries

Snälltåget operates year-round day train services between Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö, and Stockholm. Thanks to its night trains, Snälltåget provides service 220 days a year between Stockholm and Malmö to Hamburg, and Berlin, as well as to the Austrian Alps (via Salzburg), in both winter and summer.

Founded in 2007 during the liberalization of the Swedish rail market, Snälltåget—which employs 145 people—operates without any subsidies, relying solely on revenue generated from ticket sales. Half of the trains operate cross-border routes, and nearly all are equipped with dining cars known as Krogen.

Snälltåget’s rail fleet consists of seven locomotives and 77 cars (seating, couchettes, dining, and baggage) carrying over 900,000 passengers annually, including more than 100,000 on its night trains to and from Germany and Austria.

In addition to Snälltåget, Transdev also operates regional rail services north of Stockholm (Roslagsbanan) and in the province of Östergötland (Östgötapendeln).
