Does climate action mean less mobility?

“Outdoor advertising is a street‑level medium, and it is a medium that is deeply engaged with the city and its mobility. Through urban furniture — the infrastructure we provide — we have always been an actor supporting the way mobility is organised within the city. This will be even more true tomorrow, as we have a role to play in the evolution of mobility in the reinvented world of the future. For me, this involves the importance of design: how we create a place that is both comfortable and provides a range of services, allowing citizens to feel included and welcomed in the city. And at the same time, how this design — which serves not only as a support for advertising but also for information and content — can help create connection, something that builds community, enabling every citizen to feel linked to the city and actively involved in what happens there. This, I believe, is the role that outdoor advertising and outdoor communication can play in the evolution of cities in connection with changes in mobility.”

Mobility and climate action: The vision of Thierry Mallet, CEO of the Transdev Group

Does climate action mean less mobility?

Mobility is something that is linked to our daily needs. It’s linked to our need to go to work, to take care of ourselves, to study or to see friends. We can’t restrict the need for mobility because it’s also a need for contact. Our aim is to enable people to continue getting around with solutions that are more environmentally-friendly and more collective.

How can cities reinvent mobility?

In the field of energy transition, we are faced with 2 challenges:

  • A short-term challenge of satisfying mobility needs in existing cities.
  • A challenge in which we need to think about a different kind of city, one in which mobility needs may be different and in which there will be more proximity. We may need to travel less, and we’ll be able to do the same thing with less travel.

The aim today is to find solutions that are alternatives to the car in a world that was built for the car.

Why did Transdev launch The Mobility Sphere ?

What motivated us to set up this think tank was the desire to both listen and share. To listen to other solutions, to elected representatives, to local residents, to other specialists: geographers, urban planners, climate specialists. It’s this group of players who, sitting around a table, can begin to invent a new form of mobility and meet our ambitious targets: to reduce our emissions by 50% by 2030.

What is the goal of this think tank ?

Climate change is a reality and we need to move forward. The aim is to have a think tank that will talk about solutions in terms of mobility, urbanization, development of living space, cost and social equity, to ensure that this transition embraces everyone.
