Rabat-Salé light rail

Transdev Rabat-Salé operates the capital’s tram network. The initial contract, signed in 2010, was renewed in 2020 for a period of 10 years.

The Rabat-Salé Tramway project is the result of extensive long-term planning, initiated through several earlier studies, including one by Transroute in 1976 and research conducted in 1982.
In 2003, local authorities revived the idea of a dedicated public transport system (BRT/LRT) to address the mobility challenges of the metropolitan area. Based on the design studies carried out in 2005 and 2006, the Bouregreg Valley Development Agency was mandated to oversee the project in partnership with the municipalities of Rabat and Salé. In February 2007, His Majesty King Mohammed VI launched the construction works for the development of two tramway lines. The first phase of the project was completed with the start of commercial operations in May 2011.

Project ownership was entrusted to Rabat Région Mobilité (RRM), formerly the Rabat-Salé Tramway Company (STRS). RRM is the public entity responsible for managing and developing the tramway network, ensuring its proper operation and its evolution in line with urban mobility needs.
RRM awarded the operations and maintenance contract to Transdev in 2010 and again in 2020, each time for a period of 10 years.
