The Mobility Account in Mulhouse
Launched in Mulhouse in September 2018, the Mobility Account is a first in Europe. Most public and private transportation modes in Mulhouse are accessible to users via a single interface. The goal is to facilitate multimodal transportation and convenient mobility for passengers in Mulhouse.
A multimodal offer for an optimized journey
The Mobility Account is France's first implementation of MaaS (Mobility as a Service). With a mobile app and a payment card, linked to a single user account, users gain access to the agglomeration's various modes of transport with a single registration.
Already, the Compte Mobilité allows users to take Soléa buses and streetcars, borrow a VéloCité self-service bike, rent a bike via the Médiacycles association, rent a self-service car from the Citiz Alsace car-sharing network or access Mulhouse city parking lots. Payment is made retrospectively, based on actual consumption, with a single invoice at the end of each month.
What's in it for the passenger?
Thanks to the Mobility Account, daily use of transportation is made easier. Easy to use, it offers passengers a renewed mobility and transportation experience.
The unique application allows users to track their consumption in real time. Passengers only pay for the services they have used, with no subscription and no commitment.
A preliminary consultation phase to encourage public support for the project
A phase of consultation involving citizens, local authorities, and associations preceded the implementation of the Mobility Account.
Starting in 2016, Mulhouse Alsace Agglomeration organized roundtable discussions in Mulhouse and other municipalities within the agglomeration. Several developments emerged from this consultation, such as the consumption tracking feature and the option to set a budget limit.
The service was tested from March 2018 by around fifty residents. The experiment has been open to the general public since September 2018.
The Mobility Account is based on two aspects of the evolving behavior of French travelers in terms of everyday transportation:
-
The shift from intermodality to multimodality, that is, the use of multiple modes of transportation depending on the day and the journey. Mobility for the “last mile” is improved through the coexistence of different transportation options, allowing, for example, a combination of bus use and shared bicycles.
-
Promoting the use of alternatives to private cars, notably through the increase of car-sharing and bicycle use.
