Bus électrique : Transdev franchit le cap des 5 millions de kilomètres au Royaume-Uni
To mark World Environment Day on 5 June, Transdev is set to surpass five million kilometres travelled by fully electric buses across the UK. The milestone is a concrete demonstration of the Group’s commitment to lower-carbon mobility.
In the North of England, Transdev Blazefield has been rolling out zero-emission vehicles for several years, focusing on two of its subsidiaries: Harrogate Bus Company and Keighley Bus Company. Investment accelerated from 2024, with 39 battery-powered buses worth £21 million entering service for Harrogate, the last of which began operating in January 2025. In November 2025, the Keighley fleet was strengthened with a further 15 electric buses, representing £6.6 million.
By late June 2026, the operator will have covered five million zero-emission kilometres equivalent to circling the planet around 124 times. More than four million of those kilometres have been delivered by Harrogate’s eCitaro and Alexander Dennis buses, with the remainder coming from Keighley’s Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fleet.
“Being among the first bus operators in the North of England to invest in innovative, sustainable all-electric travel, and reaching such a milestone so close to World Environment Day, is a real source of pride,” said Henri Rohard, Managing Director of Transdev Blazefield.”
The environmental impact is tangible. Reaching five million kilometres is equivalent to the carbon captured by more than 80,000 trees, covering the area of eight football pitches. A single full year of service from the Keighley buses alone saves around 1,430 tonnes of CO₂ comparable to powering 270 homes for a year.
Transdev’s commitment goes beyond vehicle emissions. The buses are charged using electricity from renewable sources, including wind farms in Scotland. Further measures complete the approach: dual recycling bins on new vehicles, rainwater recovery for bus washing, and timetables printed on carbon-offset paper.
Transdev Blazefield operates more than 500 buses from nine depots across the North of England. It supports over 32 million passenger journeys each year and employs around 1,400 people, through subsidiaries including Harrogate Bus Company and Keighley Bus Company.
