Through its subsidiary Harbour City Ferries, Transdev has been operating the Sydney Ferries services as well as Balmain Shipyard since 2012, and achieved significant improvements with outstanding punctuality and customer satisfaction rates during that time.

The new contract will deliver a range of new benefits to customers including more frequent services, new vessels and a trial of new On Demand services in the Sydney Bays Precinct later this year. The new Sydney Ferries contract further strengthens Transdev’s ties to the Sydney community, with the company also operating buses and the light rail network, as well as On Demand Transport pilots in the Sutherland Shire and Manly.

To coincide with the new contract, Harbour City Ferries will be rebranded as Transdev Sydney Ferries, a new name which reflects the heritage of Sydney Ferries, as well as the operation’s connection to the global Transdev Group and its new tagline: The Mobility Company. With this new step, Transdev will become ever more part of the daily lives of Sydney’s inhabitants.

Commenting on this new contract, Thierry Mallet, Chairman and CEO of Transdev Group, declared: “This latest contract follows a series of recent positive developments for Transdev in Australia; the Sydney Ferries contract is a clear demonstration of the quality of the services provided by Transdev to the Sydney community. I am particularly proud of our Australian teams who have again demonstrated the strength of our multimodal offer in the greater Sydney region, where Transdev operates buses, coaches, the light rail network, ferries and on-demand transport. Transdev will continue to grow in Australia, including in autonomous vehicles where we recently started trial services in Armidale”.

We are proud and delighted to have been chosen to continue to operate Sydney’s ferry services, and we are looking forward to delivering many improvements during the life of the new contract. We appreciate that the delivery of the new Sydney Ferries contract is important, not only to us and our team of 583 employees but to the 15.3 million customers who have been choosing to travel with us each year.

    Transdev Australasia’s CEO Luke Agati

This new contract follows the award to the Great River City Light Rail consortium, led by Transdev, of the €330 million contract for Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail in Sydney, which will begin operations in 2023. Transdev Australasia will be responsible for the testing, commissioning and ongoing operation and maintenance for a term of eight years from construction completion. This outcome is a powerful endorsement of Transdev’s global leadership in operating 23 light rail systems in eight countries.
